Reckoning Day at S.P.O.T.

November 4, 2013 By admin

Zion Wright Tampa AM SkaterTAMPA, FL -The proving grounds were set on a brand new course at the Skate Park of Tampa. The day, November 2nd would be a day of reckoning on a battlefield where skating soldier skills would be tested. For them, it was an all-out battle in an all-star cast of skate-and-destroy daredevils who could take no prisoners if they would be called king.

Fans and fellow skaters gathered at 4215 Columbus Avenue in Tampa for what would decide “Who’s Who” in Florida skateboarding. The year was hard fought and any of the 56 skaters could have sealed the #1 ranking post for the Harvest Jam, but only one could come home as champion.

The division featured flow riders Niko Howard, Marcus Jalaber, James Cobb, Ish Cepeda, Zion Wright, Joshua Douglas, Jett Eaton, Marcos Montoya, Alejandro Burnell, Anthony Henderson, Jagger Eaton, Nick Wallace, Sam Bellipanni, Chris Noel, Davin Wynkoop, Brennan Campbell, Nick Noel, AJ Dall, Yonis Molina and Chris Jata. But that’s not to say others weren’t so privy to such stature.

Matt Call Tampa AM SkaterIt also featured fearless demon Matt Call, who is sponsored by none other than MOM!

Fourteen (14) hot-headed heats of 56 skaters dropped in at the start of the 3 minute jam sessions and tried their dam-nest to earn a place on the podium. It looked like 2X returning winner Tyson Peterson would become king again. Coming off several broken instances of the same ankle, some crowd goers had their doubts. His performance in his heat ranked him at #1 heading into the final jam. He once again locked, loaded and spun the course like a well-oiled machine. Missing here-and-there, it looked like it could go his way. And, if you weren’t watching very closely, you would believe that.

But the bursting blue beam burning up the wooden ramps in true speed and style was from a new era. It was Zion Wright from Jupiter Florida; Nike’s flow skater who was there for business. Unlike many of his previous performances of 2013, Zy was on-target and on time! He landed most everything he took to and stuck trick after trick, nailed rail after rail.

In the end it was easy for the judges to see the light and label Zion Wright as overall Champ of the Sponsored Division at S.P.O.T’s Harvest Jam.

The AM Sponsored finals featured a laundry list of incredible skaters, some who could win it in 2014, but and the 6 that took the podium in the end finished as follows:

  • First Place – Zion Wright, Jupiter, FL
  • Second Place – Tyson Peterson, Melbourne, FL
  • Third Place – Marcus Jalaber, Clearwater, FL
  • Fourth Place – Conner Askew, Palm Bay, FL
  • Fifth Place – Niko Howard, Atlanta, GA
  • Sixth Place – James Cobb, Tampa FL

It was a stellar event and one that every skater on the East Coast should register for to test their skill level, and one to get ready for when setting sights on DamnAm or TampaAM contests.

King of the AM at Kona

October 30, 2013 By admin

JACKSONVILLE, FL – The King of the Groms / King of the AMs have sealed another qualifier event at Kona Skate Park in Jacksonville, Florida toward their 2014 Championships slated for June 2014. Like last year, the competition was strong, and especially entertaining in the street skating AM division.

The AM division playing field was stacked with Jacksonville’s Blaine Partridge, Jupiter’s Zion Wright, out-of-stater Christian Fonseco, Pompano Beach’s Titus Massinello, Dunedine’s Nick Wallace, and Sarasota’s Tyler Hunger. This qualifier was more of a Championships finale and it was impossible for most on-lookers to guess who might get cut from this pack of rogue and wild dogs. In the end the judges had their work cut out for them and the rankings fell in the order of 1st Fonseco, 2nd Partridge, 3rd Massinello, 4th Wright, and 5th Wallace. Like we said it was anyone’s take for the gold with consistency probably being the biggest factor on the final standings.

In the Open division it was anyone’s game. With last year’s winner Will Schumatti of Jupiter, FL sidelined, the field was wide open for the next post-grom shredder to take the podium. Palm City’s Kyler Brandt showed strong possibilities and Lil Nick Dellgatti claimed consistency in his second run to qualify for Sunday’s finals. Crowd favorite Ryan Stephens landed some pretty good grinds, and Lachlan Yardborough, sponsored by Fuel Clothing claimed consistency all weekend long. But is was a veteran Naples, FL skater by way of Leo Marino that grabbed gold as his higher level tricks sealed it for the judges who ruled on 4 criteria; the use of the course, style, missed and landed tricks on their scorecards.

In the Expert division of KOTG, local Jax skater, Hal Scarborough of Kona took second place and Sam Ogden, an out of state skater sponsored by Emerica, took gold.

The Intermediate and Beginner fields carried strong skaters who know these courses well. For the first time ever, KOTG staff bumped skaters up they saw as beyond beginner levels like that of Rory Doran from Jupiter, Florida.

For skaters missing their “golden ticket” to the Championships, two qualifiers remain for the chance to skate this summer in Minnesota and they include Simi Valley, California and Mesa, Arizona.

One thing is for sure. The KOTG and KOTA contest has stepped it up a notch or twenty for this year’s competition. It appears they have their shit together finally and Trog and his Army aren’t taking any breaks as they burst into the professional skating scene in the real contests division.

Nyjah on NBC

August 28, 2013 By admin

Nyjah Houston has been televised on many television stations around the world and now he can add NBC’s Today Show to his list.

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

The dean-of-mean was on the show promoting his favorite past-time SKATEBOARDING. And it’s good news for the entire world of skaters out there. Nyjah is the “trojan horse” of skating and he’s won more championships that we can count on our toes and hands combined.

He really shines for the sport and we are all lucky he’s involved in it. This opens the doors to more notability of skateboarding as a “sport” even though it’s the ultimate “lifestyle”. The difference between the two is that you can have fun and exercise with a lifestyle for your entire life, whereas a sport only exists for a period of time, usually in your youth.

So without further do here is a clip of the TV network’s first pro skateboarder, probably since Tony Hawk.

Like it, Love it, whatever, but be aware that if you do you are contributing to more future encounters with athletes like Nyjah being featured on internationally known television stations.
