SFLA Boys Rock-n-Roll at GFL

June 14, 2015 By admin

It’s enough the park is home to local legend Jamie Foy.

It’s enough the park is revamped with pro-level ramps and rails, but The Board’r to come in and hold an all out who’s who of south Florida skateboarding is ample icing on the cake! Oh, and Chad of Oh Cake was in the house too.

No matter the division, locals from Miami, Broward and Palm Beach took top slots in just about every division. In a place dominated by northern competitions by the like of Tampa and Jax, it’s relieving to see our local talents shine  on their home turf(s).

Board’r put the event together in tandem with Grind For Life, the organization whose mission it to wipe out cancer, better known as “Skate & Destroy Cancer”. Ramp 48 staff did a stellar job accommodating skater needs in the hardware, service, food and service departments while Rob’s team went to work orchestrating another world class contest in our backyard. I’m pumped to have been in attendance.

Clint Bangs/Josh Steals Show

February 14, 2015 By admin

With guns blazing, Clint came out banging, at the finals of the sponsored division at the Valentine’s Day Massacre at Tampa skate park where a rare spectacle of talent as Douglas, Beswick, Hunt, Foy and Montoya took the course by storm. Pumping on adrenaline from hard-fought battles all afternoon long, these 5 showed why skateboarding is the REAL talent in sports these days. Assembled as a 5 minute jam, each skater used the park to carve out distinct niche’s in matching their talent across the course terrain.

2015-vdm-bannerDespite Beswick’s smashing run, Josh Douglas stole the show. He overpowered all, even Montoya to claim victory as the champion at Tampa’s VDM. Marcos Montoya was rocking it hard, but in the judges eyes, it wasn’t enough to grab the top platform on the podium. Jamie Foy and Dakota Hunt were on course to rank among the stars; placing 4th and 5th respectively.

The Sponsored Division finals are where Clint and Josh killed it along with Dakota, Jamie and Marcos. Here’s the video of that 5 minute jam.

The judges for the contest repped the Dickies brand all day long!

Champ Retains Harvest Crown

Tampa, FL 2014 – Cold weather, wind and clear skies gave way to the appropriately names Harvest Jam, the Skatepark of Tampa’s annual who’s who contest for Florida skateboarding. Mr. Schaefer and his crew put this event TOGETHER. Nice job! It’s always a great experience when the day goes off without a hitch. The newer photographer DrBlowTorch is a bomb of a photographer and as always we met some really great people in the skateboarding business like newly created Oh Cake Skateboard Co, who promises some new technologies in skateboarding.

As the day unfolded so did the Sponsored Finals and last year’s champ was back to defend what he earned last year. A now older, and wiser Zion took to the beautiful new course and carved out a picturesque run using every piece of the course. He tossed when others turned and vise versa. It was like he planned his near perfect execution with ease.

An older, not nagging leg injury (obviously) didn’t stop Zion Wright’s top performance which could land him in one of the top slots at the upcoming 2014 Tampa AM in December at Skate Park of Tampa. The swinging antics of Mr. Wright included a charismatic display of unorthodox tricks that keep even most of his comrades in “Awe”. So its easy to say he is a crown favorite for a lot of skaters, and  a polite kid. Sponsors listen up, Zion could be your man! he’s a pretty cool kid.

S.P.o.T. front-man Brian S. put on a solid show at this year's Harvest Jam 2014. The Sponsor Division sold out and that means SkatePark of Tampa is getting some well-deserved respect these days. Congrats!

That’s not to say the other kids aren’t cool. Most everyone of them has a unique personality which makes skateboarding a very interesting lifestyle. When you dress up in a suit and tie every day for the rest of your life, you realize these “kids” are pretty cool. Zy came out swinging two years in a row to hold onto his Harvest Jam 2014 crown. Now his sights are set on Tampa AM. Last year he put on great performances at Damn AM, Tampa AM, and many others so it will be interesting to see how he does. My opinion is that he’s on fire, so competitors take notice, you’ve been warned!

Niko Massacres Valentine Skaters

February 9, 2014 By admin

Niko rode everything and we mean everything including this wall.
Niko rode everything and we mean everything including this wall.

TAMPA, FL – How high can a street skater get in a second? If you ask the question to Niko Howard he could truthfully say about 18 feet. And he has proof to back him up because in the finals of Tampa’s Valentine’s Day Massacre contest, he did just that. He went from flat to 18′ feet on a few of the skate park’s walls in only a single second.

It wasn’t the only thing he did to stand out in his crowded field of the furious 5  in the finals. He intelligently used every part of the course as his personal playground and won over the crowd many times. His powerful exertion of heart-pumping energy captivated the audience and his ovation was not less than “standing”.

He wasn’t the only famed-skater to earning accolades though. James Cobb was absolutely on fire in the best performance ever seen on his hometown course. He ridiculously ripped the stairs over and over. He trailed Niko’s neck-n-neck as we was nailing almost every flat ground trick he attempted.

These two had their day at the Massacre and left dust in the air of the other, also extremely talented, field of skaters. (Sorry guys it was not your day IN THE FINALS). If the judges had their way of choosing their respective jams for scoring, I am confident they would of. Because Chris, Tyler and Alejandro are certainly more talented at landing the tricks they attempted, but sometimes the icing just wasn’t put on the cake. It didn’t matter so much though for scoring skateboarding skills, Niko and James are in a league of their own as of today.

The results tallied as follows:

  1. Niko Howard
  2. James Cobb
  3. Chris Noel
  4. Alejandro Burnell
  5. Tyler Hunger

Here is the finals of the 18 Jams from the Sponsored Divisions.
