Italo Romano a veteran Tampa Pro skater now since 2012 is a crowd favorite.
Italo Romano of Brazil, has been a skater on the Tampa Pro circuit since 2012. Italo is a crowd favorite!:)

TAMPA, FL – Its on and the Tampa Pro 2014, presented by Nike SB is back for their 20th annual contest & competition. If its like anything from last year the event promises to be a showdown of elite skater athletes. There’s $75k on the line for the pro purse. The United States Whos Who of skateboarding is about to unfold and this is the official update from the authority of Florida skateboarding.

It all takes place March 21st through the 23rd. The regular admission to skate starts on Thursday March 20th noon to 9p.m. The nighttime activities include an Art Show of Assorted Collectives featuring 20+ artists with a passion for skateboarding in their nostalgia-based artwork, happening at The Bricks. The $75,000 purse is split between the top skaters of the contest as follows: 1st: $20,000, 2nd: $15,000, 3rd: $10,000, 4th: $5,000, 5th: $4,000, 6th: $3,000, 7th: $2,000, 8th: $1,750, 9th: $1,500, 10th: $1,250, 11th: $1,000, 12th: $1,000.

Sean Malto is a strategic skateboarder and uses his brain on every run.
Shane O’Neill a pro skateboarder from Australia hopefully will be competing in the 2014 Tampa Pro.
Nyjah, the winner of numerous Street League Titles, will be trying to avenge his loss to Luan in last year’s Tampa Pro.
P-Rod has turned his celebrity skateboarding image into a Hollywood actor persona appearing in 4 films: Vicious Circle, Street Dreams, Yeah Right!, and Forecast.
Curren turned pro in March 2013, and his first professional contest was the Tampa Pro, where he placed 15th.
Street League professional skateboarder, Manny Santiago gets ready at the Tampa Pro Contest.

IMHO the most exciting part of last years competition for FL skateboarding comes when the pros throw-down at the annual best trick contest, sponsored by Silver Trucks. This year a solid ante is one the line valued as follows: 1st: $3,000, 2nd: $2,000, 3rd: $1,000, 4th: $1,000, 5th: $1,000 On Friday the doors open early at 9a.m. so get your early-bird cap on and hit the bleachers to watch the pros get it on in practice-mode all day long.

That means Nyjah is skating on Saturday and a reason everyone should attend the qualifiers.“

Noon marks a VIP Street Contest, a 5pm riders meeting and at only 9p.m., the park shuts down to get ready for their big day. See the complete agenda below.

The events organizer and host, the Skatepark of Tampa announced 5 professionals who will be competing in it. They are Chris Cole, Eric Koston, Shane O’Neill, Ishod Wair and Nyjah Huston! Also confirmed are Justin Brock, Grant Taylor, Brad Cromer and Ben Raybourn.

You wont see these skaters compete on Saturday as they are previous winners the Tampa Pro. They go straight to the Semi-Finals on Sunday.

Run to Board’r, G4L Series Rocks!

March 2, 2014 By admin

2014-03-01gfl-lakeland-fl-25

LAKELAND, FL – That was a really cool contest for skateboarding. Ive been to many shows since we entered Florida; Palm Bay, Cocoa Beach, Jacksonville, Melbourne, Orlando, Tampa, even Miami or Ft. Lauderdale. This one stood out with clarity. Grind for Life Series has potential and serious skateboarding professionals are behind it. There was divisions for everyone including a women’s division, adult men’s division, old dudes, all on a street course!

The vibe was inviting and there were more than 140 skaters who competed on a course that had an unbelievable amount of things to shred. There was plenty of other things for others to do too, like get a haircut, — there was barbers cutting hair (very, very thoughtful!) There was free breakfast & coffee, Beckys Hot Dogs (yummie), good-clean-sounding amplification of punk, rock music &announcing (very, very nice for the parento’s).

Skater Killed Chasing Board

February 17, 2014 By admin

LAKELAND – It’s sad news, again. This time FLSK8 learned another kid died what he loved doing most, skateboarding. This post is not meant to scare, only remind all of us to think before doing stupid things. It’s sad but for $100 skateboard, this FL skater lost his life. Devyn Rainey was only 16 when he succumbed to injuries after chasing his skateboard on a busy highway in Florida.

Here is the article as it appeared in a local Lakeland Newspaper.Tampa Skater Dies Chasing Board

A junior at George Jenkins High School was struck and killed by a vehicle this afternoon when his skateboard rolled into an intersection and he tried to get it.

About 5 p.m., Devyn Rainey, 16, was standing on a curb at South Florida Avenue and Schoolhouse Road in Lakeland when his skateboard rolled into the southbound lanes of South Florida, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

When he went into the road to get the skateboard, he went into the path of a 2005 Ford E-150 Econoline van driven by Douglas Heruska, 58. Heruska had a green light at the intersection.

Devyn, of 745 Wilmington Pass, Apt. 201, of Lakeland, died instantly, the sheriff’s office said. Heruska, of 80 Country Club Lane in Mulberry, immediately stopped and attempted to render aid, along with several other bystanders and witnesses.

Both roads are closed until about 9 p.m. this evening, so the sheriff’s office recommends motorists find another route through the area.

Niko Massacres Valentine Skaters

February 9, 2014 By admin

Niko rode everything and we mean everything including this wall.
Niko rode everything and we mean everything including this wall.

TAMPA, FL – How high can a street skater get in a second? If you ask the question to Niko Howard he could truthfully say about 18 feet. And he has proof to back him up because in the finals of Tampa’s Valentine’s Day Massacre contest, he did just that. He went from flat to 18′ feet on a few of the skate park’s walls in only a single second.

It wasn’t the only thing he did to stand out in his crowded field of the furious 5  in the finals. He intelligently used every part of the course as his personal playground and won over the crowd many times. His powerful exertion of heart-pumping energy captivated the audience and his ovation was not less than “standing”.

He wasn’t the only famed-skater to earning accolades though. James Cobb was absolutely on fire in the best performance ever seen on his hometown course. He ridiculously ripped the stairs over and over. He trailed Niko’s neck-n-neck as we was nailing almost every flat ground trick he attempted.

These two had their day at the Massacre and left dust in the air of the other, also extremely talented, field of skaters. (Sorry guys it was not your day IN THE FINALS). If the judges had their way of choosing their respective jams for scoring, I am confident they would of. Because Chris, Tyler and Alejandro are certainly more talented at landing the tricks they attempted, but sometimes the icing just wasn’t put on the cake. It didn’t matter so much though for scoring skateboarding skills, Niko and James are in a league of their own as of today.

The results tallied as follows:

  1. Niko Howard
  2. James Cobb
  3. Chris Noel
  4. Alejandro Burnell
  5. Tyler Hunger

Here is the finals of the 18 Jams from the Sponsored Divisions.
