Family Embarks to Build Park
LAKE CITY, FL -A family is doing all they can to bring attention to the need for a skate park to be built in the community of Lake City in Florida. The plans started after a 9 year old boy and his dad began to imagine how great it would be for the kids to have a skate park built. So they went to the town officials and started the lobbying process to have a skate park constructed.
After a short period of time, they realized how difficult it was, and started reaching out to others who might of experienced similar dismay. they contacted the Tony Hawk Foundation, and had architecture renderings of the “park” drawn.
This is a 20,000 sq ft facility that will have a 5ft x 24ft mini vert, 13ft x 52ft vert ramp, 9ft deep and 6 ft shallow pool and plenty of flow for all skill levels. This facility will cost between $850k – $900k.
After a few meetings with the town prolonged their desired result, they rethought their plans and decided to go “BiG”. That’s when they reached out to Tony Misiano, skate park developer and architecture guru to help with their plans. Now they have some initial drawings on how the park might be built. But their story is just beginning and we are trying to get the word out for them, so if anyone can help these guys out, please reach out to them, here: Organizer Lawrence Lerwick [email protected]
Please Attend Our Town Meeting on January 20th at 6pm!!!!!

Champ Retains Harvest Crown
Tampa, FL 2014 – Cold weather, wind and clear skies gave way to the appropriately names Harvest Jam, the Skatepark of Tampa’s annual who’s who contest for Florida skateboarding. Mr. Schaefer and his crew put this event TOGETHER. Nice job! It’s always a great experience when the day goes off without a hitch. The newer photographer DrBlowTorch is a bomb of a photographer and as always we met some really great people in the skateboarding business like newly created Oh Cake Skateboard Co, who promises some new technologies in skateboarding.
As the day unfolded so did the Sponsored Finals and last year’s champ was back to defend what he earned last year. A now older, and wiser Zion took to the beautiful new course and carved out a picturesque run using every piece of the course. He tossed when others turned and vise versa. It was like he planned his near perfect execution with ease.
An older, not nagging leg injury (obviously) didn’t stop Zion Wright’s top performance which could land him in one of the top slots at the upcoming 2014 Tampa AM in December at Skate Park of Tampa. The swinging antics of Mr. Wright included a charismatic display of unorthodox tricks that keep even most of his comrades in “Awe”. So its easy to say he is a crown favorite for a lot of skaters, and a polite kid. Sponsors listen up, Zion could be your man! he’s a pretty cool kid.
That’s not to say the other kids aren’t cool. Most everyone of them has a unique personality which makes skateboarding a very interesting lifestyle. When you dress up in a suit and tie every day for the rest of your life, you realize these “kids” are pretty cool. Zy came out swinging two years in a row to hold onto his Harvest Jam 2014 crown. Now his sights are set on Tampa AM. Last year he put on great performances at Damn AM, Tampa AM, and many others so it will be interesting to see how he does. My opinion is that he’s on fire, so competitors take notice, you’ve been warned!

Florida Gets “Wild” at Volcom Skate Contest
COSTA MESA, CA – Droves of Florida skaters packed their bags, headed to PBI, FTL & MIA and hopped a ride to LAX and John Wayne airport in California to take part in the 2014 Volcom Wild In The Parks skateboarding contest. A gravy train of talented shredders participated led by 2014 Volcom Destroyer Award winner Dalton Dern and top-3 place finisher Jamie Foy in the Open AM division. Each of these warriors entertained the crowd on the very tight course at the skate park at Volcom. They killed it and took plenty of punishment all weekend long for their efforts.
The Wild in the Parks contest name is representative of their iconic symbol (A nine foot gorilla holding the Volcom logo over his head). And their crew is made up of some solids who love skateboarding; even the security guards (despite denying us hot dogs!) Rippers from the Sunshine state included like Blaine Partridge, Chris Roque, Marco Montoya, Hal Scarborough, Will Schumatti, Landon Swan, Alex Sandino, Max Potter and Mike Post who each made the journey to the west coast to compete in the competition. The pace was furious as skaters each jockeyed for positions to get a good shot at sticking their tricks in an effort to make the finals. In the end many did just that placing in Volcom’s premiere skateboarding event for amateurs in the world!
The rules for the contest were simple, WITP is a best trick contest where skaters could drop bombs in each of the 3 zones. All fails didn’t count, and all executed tricks were scored from 0-20, with a total possible score of 60.
The Park at Melbourne rider Tyson Peterson came down to check on the talent, along with tight buds and FL-SHREDDERS >>Deein Coats and >>Ish Cepeda, in town to visit. Tyson is now residing out of Long Beach and placed 3rd in 2014 Damn Am Qualifier at Woodward West. Fellow Park skater Brandon Starr was there scoping too. There were even old-time Volcom skateboarding supporters who shared a couple laughs with old friends along the 3 day event.
When not confined to the indoor park, skaters shredded it up at the outdoor Volcom Park. When it wasn’t enough many traveled to Venice to skate on da beach. Some made it to THE BERRICS Public Park in Westchester. (We made it over to the sickest park of them all at Sheldon Skatepark in SunValley. (It’s kinda like the Wild West out there, and bring cash cause they take no credit cards).
In all, if you’re into street skating and love contests, this one was the perfect excuse to desert your home state for a long weekend in southern California to experience the lifestyle most everyone dreams about. So I would definitely recommend this skate contest as your #1 target venue in the USA for amateur skateboarding competition. Volcom did a bang-up job with all aspects of the event; but there was a little lag in scoring the finals. And David Gonzales was denied a “free” hot dog.
We can’t wait to do it again and compete at Surf Expo in 2015 at their Volcom WITP qualifier at the Orlando Convention Center.
