Florida Gets “Wild” at Volcom Skate Contest

October 18, 2014 By admin

Jamie Foy celebrates his run in the finals that earned him Top 3.

COSTA MESA, CA – Droves of Florida skaters packed their bags, headed to PBI, FTL & MIA  and hopped a ride to LAX and John Wayne airport in California to take part in the 2014 Volcom Wild In The Parks skateboarding contest. A gravy train of talented shredders participated led by 2014 Volcom Destroyer Award winner Dalton Dern and top-3 place finisher Jamie Foy in the Open AM division. Each of these warriors entertained the crowd on the very tight course at the skate park at Volcom. They killed it and took plenty of punishment all weekend long for their efforts.

The Wild in the Parks contest name is representative of their iconic symbol (A nine foot gorilla holding the Volcom logo over his head). And their crew is made up of some solids who love skateboarding; even the security guards (despite denying us hot dogs!) Rippers from the Sunshine state included like Blaine Partridge, Chris Roque, Marco Montoya, Hal Scarborough, Will Schumatti, Landon Swan, Alex Sandino, Max Potter and Mike Post who each made the journey to the west coast to compete in the competition. The pace was furious as skaters each jockeyed for positions to get a good shot at sticking their tricks in an effort to make the finals. In the end many did just that placing in Volcom’s premiere skateboarding event for amateurs in the world!

The rules for the contest were simple, WITP is a best trick contest where skaters could drop bombs in each of the 3 zones. All fails didn’t count, and all executed tricks were scored from 0-20, with a total possible score of 60.

The WITP Championships event model represented Volcom perfectly in her " skater clothes.

The Park at Melbourne rider Tyson Peterson came down to check on the talent, along with tight buds and FL-SHREDDERS >>Deein Coats and >>Ish Cepeda, in town to visit. Tyson is now residing out of Long Beach and placed 3rd in 2014 Damn Am Qualifier at Woodward West. Fellow Park skater Brandon Starr was there scoping too. There were even old-time Volcom skateboarding supporters who shared a couple laughs with old friends along the 3 day event.

When not confined to the indoor park, skaters shredded it up at the outdoor Volcom Park. When it wasn’t enough many traveled to Venice to skate on da beach. Some made it to THE BERRICS Public Park in Westchester. (We made it over to the sickest park of them all at Sheldon Skatepark in SunValley. (It’s kinda like the Wild West out there, and bring cash cause they take no credit cards).

Los Angeles best skate park for street is in Sun Valley at Sheldon.
Costa Mesa public park, is a hot spot for street.
The BERRICS outdoor park is a skate plaza mecca for all levels of skateboaridng.
Sheldon skatepark rails are a street skater’s dream.
Sklate all day and night on the beach in Venice, CA.
The Berrics public skatepark is really fun.

In all, if you’re into street skating and love contests, this one was the perfect excuse to desert your home state for a long weekend in southern  California to experience the lifestyle most everyone dreams about. So I would definitely recommend this skate contest as your #1 target venue in the USA for amateur skateboarding competition. Volcom did a bang-up job with all aspects of the event; but there was a little lag in scoring the finals. And David Gonzales was denied a “free” hot dog.

We can’t wait to do it again and compete at Surf Expo in 2015 at their Volcom WITP qualifier at the Orlando Convention Center.

Blaine Partridge competed in 15-21 and took 5th!
Brandon Starr makes do for the nice cameraman.
Deein gives his trademark l@@k.
Hal Scarborough skated in 14 & Under.
Ish Capeda gets into the action at WITP.
Tyson Peterson recently took 3rd at DamAm West.
Will Schumatti gets ready for his run in 15 to 21 age division.
Landon Swan competed in 14 & Under and took 4th.

David Gonzales, if skateboarding isn’t enough, now he’s in an incredible rock band.
Paul Rodriguez, Nike SB skateboarder has an outdoor billboard in Los Angeles Venice skatepark.
Skaters say when they enter the “dragon” of the Volcom private park they get goose bumps!
Jersey Mike’s Subs opened their first shop in Los Angeles recently. Mmm!

Duke, an owner at Surfside hooked us up with a deck for the competition.

FL Skaters Air on TV

August 18, 2014 By admin

Two Florida contest skateboarders made national airways this week when their skating skills opened the doors for an opportunity to be part of a national television commercial for Office Max and Office Depot. The two office supply companies merged last year in a big deal on the New York Stock Exchange. More to come as the story is finalized for publication.

It all started a couple months ago when a talent agency in Naples, FL began searching for skateboarders who could “drop in a huge half pipe”. That announcement captured the attention of several skaters in Florida who tried out at the casting call in Miami. But before you could go to that actor audition, Schilling Advertising Agency, from New York City mandated that each skater needed to film themselves dropping in a big ramp and say a couple of corny punchlines. (It was obvious they agency wasn’t that well versed in the skate scene.)

The talent agency submitted 31 applications in total to the casting agent for the top 3 jobs which included $2,500 for the main role, and two (2) $250 background skater roles. Two skaters earned some cash, as Titus Massinello and Will Schumatti were selected and asked to return the day before the shoot to prep them for their roles. Both were well above what the agency needed in skill level for their roles as “extras”. The main role was secured by an actor Mavrick Moreno who had to spit out the line “Cool computer, where’d you get that?”

Titus and Will both made the most of it, basically getting paid to skate in Brian Piccolo Skate Park in Cooper City, FL. When the commercial aired on national television this month on ABC, NBC, CBS channels just in time for “back to school”, both boys were not visible in the tv ad, though Will made the opening scene (see the blurry image of a skater on a ramp in the upper left corner) hahaha. Pretty funny we thought!

On a side (and funny) note. The Director tried to control the rambunctious skaters who did what skaters do best, skated! And when he said “Cut!”, the two just kept skating. When the Director yelled “ACTION!” it really didn’t matter because the skaters were already skating (lol). When it was over and the Director screamed “that’s a wrap!”, as you can guess, the two didn’t even hear him; they just kept skating. In fact it was tough to get them two out of there when the shoot was finally over!

The entire production was licensed in Florida by Highland Talent payments.

Seeking Practice Skate Location

June 3, 2014 By admin

UPDATE: Thank you South Florida Skate Parks – FLSK8 received a few generous offers to facilitate our need for a competitive skate environment for our shredders who wanna compete and we want to say thank you!

In our original Post, we wrote: – We have a group of EXCELLENT skateboarders who desperately need a location like a warehouse or open parcel of land to erect a private SKATE RAIL to practice for competition. Or in the best circumstances, a custom mini skate “park”. We do not need the full Monty of a park, just a down ramp to gain speed to hit the rails. We need a warehouse or raw land (paved), and a welder for rail manufacturing. We also need construction pros to help build what we need to compete, and lumber yard and steel donations to make the ultimate grind facility.

Skateboarders: if you know someone and want to give us their contact info to contact them about this, that is fine, just contact us via text or email to get started. Our skaters are mostly in Palm Beach County but we will travel for a location.

My inspiration to get a skateboard practice location.

Friends remember teen skater killed in Bradenton crash

BRADENTON – Andrew Rothfuss sat by a pillar at the skate park on Tuesday. Under his feet, the words “R.I.P. Brett Hoover” were scratched into his brand new skateboard. His friend Andrew Rothfuss, 16, shares a photo of his deceased friend, William B. Hoover Tuesday afternoon at the Bradenton Riverwalk Skatepark. The two friends would spend nights at the skatepark practicing their skills. “We’d be passed out, sitting right here at the pillars,” Rothfuss said.AMARIS CASTILLO/Bradenton Herald
