Skateboarder Killed with Taser

MIA Skateshop employee Israel Hernandez was apparently killed from a taser used by Miami Beach Police after the young and talented skateboarder refused to surrender when confronted for graffiti vandalism at 71st street and Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, FL.

The sad news resonated in the skateboard community as FL skaters come to grips with this tragic event. It is not clear what happened or who is to blame but a South Florida newspaper of Broward and Miami-Dade County is stating the facts of the incident on their website. Our prayers go out to the victim’s family and we are considering how we can help raise awareness of this sad issue in hopes of educating our young, talented, and ambitious skate community.

King of the Coast Takes FL

Event Results: Clint Beswick wins the first King of the Coast skate contest in Florida. The ripper was awarded $1,000 cash and had everyone in awe the enter afternoon. Skaters rocked on with the After Party as well.

This time they are hosting a total skate blow out with the likes of a new style of skate competitions in FL with King of the Coast!Ã‚Â Two men will battle it out in the first skate event of it’s kind. When the whole things over, munch out with your favorite ams, flows and pros at The Captain’s House restaurant and pub in Palm Bay. With all this action, we give these guys a solid thumbs up and will post results after their event.

Man Skates Maine to Florida

The Delmarva Now newspaper has reported that a man from East Lansing Michigan is skating his way down the East Coast to Florida.

Brian Zygmontowicz is 28 years old and said the reason he’s doing it is because he wants to be a better skateboarder. He also thinks he is the first person to embark on such a journey.

Last it was reported he quit his job climbing cell phone towers and took off for FL.

He was last spotted at Stuckey’s restaurant in Mappsville, and was headed straight for the Florida Keys.

We sure hope he decides to stop in Jupiter at Florida’s best skatepark in the Abacoa community.

“I’ll be there to pick pick him up, buy him some grub, and get him some necessary gear if he looks me up.” said skateboard reporter Ollie Rages. Ollie is a columnist for FLSK8.com, Florida’s online contest finder website for skateboarding.

Pro Skater Gets Shoe Deal

GO MANNY! GO! – Manny Santiago is currently having a summer filled with milestones: He recently welcomed his first child, and now he’s celebrating the release of his first pro shoe with Axion, the “Mijo.” Mijo, which affectionately means “my boy” in Spanish, was a nickname given to him by Axion team manager Mark Brandstetter, who nicknames everyone while on skate tours. When it was time to pick a name for Santiago’s pro model, Brandstetter immediately suggested “Mijo,” and Santiago happily agreed.

Rodeo Girls Return to Miami

rodeo girls skate — The rodeo girls will return to skateboarding at Miami Skate Rodeo.

The Rodeo is South Florida’s premiere skateboarding event is coming to Miami in September 2013. The purpose of the Skateboard Rodeo is to help raise funds and educate our community on new and unique local 501c3 non-profit organizations within the Miami-Dade County area.

Two Hundred (200+) skaters participated and hundreds of spectators attended last year. Skaters traveled from as far away as Jacksonville and Key West to battle for $3,000 in cash, prizes and sponsorship.

Amigos provides community kids with skateboard equipment, act as positive role models and sponsor summertime skate trips. The also offer free skate instruction clinics, holiday toy drives and collect food for needing people.

We are proud to announce that 305 Green will be hosting the Punk Rock Flea MarketÂ this year with a funky mix of original and eclectic finds, locally made products, Pop up Gallery featuring art by Alex Yanes, Josh Hall and Chris Valdes, skate shops and plenty of fun from some of the best independently run businesses in and around Miami.

The skate contest portion of the event will be comprised of six different style contests; a game of skate, highest ollie, blindfolded kick flips, ledge/box contest, barrel jumping and a stair/hubba contest. We will be adding more ramps to give the park a different feel and we have organized the contests in a way that will keep open skating in the park throughout the day ensuring a good time for everyone whether they will be competing or not.
Chris Casey will return this year to be the official contest announcer. He is best known as the co-host of Fuel TVs Captain and Casey show and has also hosted for Maloof Money Cup and Transworld Skateboarding.
